Pro Evolution Soccer has enjoyed a renaissance this season. Their evolution coupled with FIFA’s backtracking have left the door wide open for the Konami game to jump back to the pinnacle of the football genre.
PES this year is everything that FIFA isn’t. The gameplay is effortless, while there is a clear difference between the big games and the average mid-season fixtures between Manchester United and Brighton. FIFA meanwhile is just a slog from start to finish. There are glitches throughout Career Mode leaving you wondering whether you’re fighting for a league title or sitting comfortably in the middle of the table.
If PES is to truly to overtake FIFA and leave the EA title in their dust, then they should treat Master League as the gem in their armour, and there are still changes that can be made to give players the ultimate experience.
More Freedom With Managerial Appearance
The gameplay itself within Master League doesn’t need much altering, but there are a few subtle differences that could give players a better experience. Adding legendary managers such as Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff is a good start. Players could thrive at Master League if they are given more freedom than simply changing the outfit they are wearing. This, and adding more legendary managers and current ones could also be a good bonus.
New Cut Scenes
The scenes within Master League seem to have aged, and that could make the mode stale. The cut scenes need to be updated, with different ones for every club. After all, the training set-up at Barcelona is completely different from what you could expect to find at a club like West Bromwich Albion.
Konami could extend the agreements that they have with some of Europe’s elite to include the actual rooms that they have behind the scenes. That would be an excellent touch, and would immediately give fans of those clubs a better experience.
Transfer Negotiations
FIFA’s career mode still blows PES out of the water when it comes to signing and selling players. FIFA enables players to meet with the player that they are hoping to bring in to agree terms. However, PES makes it too confusing as they don’t give any explanation why a player doesn’t want to join.
For instance, Bruno Fernandes may refuse to leave Sporting Lisbon as he doesn’t feel like he will be an important player at your club. The only way to tempt him is by throwing more money at him. Konami could develop this by allowing the manager to tell the player that the kind of role he has in mind.
However, the initial signs are good, and if PES can improve again for the 2021 instalment of the game, then it could be able to topple FIFA’s dominance.
