Mortal Kombat: Legacy Was An Underrated Addition To The Franchise

Back in 2010, we got a fan film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. This fan film took a different approach to the franchise, with more of a grounding in reality.

It featured Michael Jai White as Jackson Briggs (one of the best ideas in the world), Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade and Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion.

The trailer blasted its way through the internet and I remember freaking out myself. We had not had a good Mortal Kombat film or series for years, and we were hungry for a darker, grittier version of the franchise.

We got just that with Rebirth. However, it was never picked up for a feature film. Thankfully, someone realized the treasure that lay before them, and we got the underrated series Mortal Kombat: Legacy!

“The first season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy is a prequel to the original game, explaining the background stories of several characters from the series and demonstrating their reasons for participating in the upcoming tenth Mortal Kombat tournament on which the first game was based. The episodes are non-linear with minimal continuity and each devoted to the story of a specific character or characters. The second season covers the tournament itself.”

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Was An Underrated Addition To The Franchise

The series went into the backstories of popular characters and even brought in Shang Tsung actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa to reprise his role from the original film.

This series saw some carryover from the fan film with Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, and Ian Anthony Dale, and seemingly continued what was started.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy also brought in action-star Casper Van Dien as Johnny Cage, martial artist Mark Dacascos as Kung Lao, and Brian Tee as Liu Kang.

The series lasted for two seasons and was one of the best additions to the Mortal Kombat franchise that often gets forgotten.

The fight choreography was solid, the actors carried their weight and it really got to go in-depth with a ton of the characters that had appeared in the games for years!

It bothers me that not more people know about this series, but hopefully, with the new Mortal Kombat film coming out, people will start discovering this. While not every moment of it is great, there’s far more good than bad.

I liked this series so much I actually have both seasons on blu-ray, and will occasionally pop them in. It’s too bad there was never a third season, but so much came from the Rebirth short film, that this series existing at all is a treat in itself.

I mean, they even have Kenshi and Ermac! What more could you want? What do you think? Did you ever see this when it came out? Let us know in the comments below.
