The television landscape is set to shift on February 24th with the highly anticipated debut of Beyond The Gates, the first new soap opera to premiere since Passions graced screens in 1999. This groundbreaking series, set to air on CBS at 2 p.m. ET, promises to deliver a fresh perspective on the genre, captivating audiences with its diverse cast and compelling storylines.

At the helm of this ambitious project are creator, executive producer, and head writer Michele Val Jean and fellow Executive Producer Sheila Ducksworth. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the dynamic duo shared insights into their creative journey and the vision that fuels Beyond The Gates.

Their collaboration, born from a chance encounter facilitated by actress Vivica A. Fox, is a testament to the power of shared passion. Fox, who starred in Generations – the first soap to center on Black characters – connected Val Jean and Ducksworth, recognizing their shared desire to reshape the landscape of daytime television.

“I told [Fox] that I wanted to make a soap, and she said, ‘Well, if you want to make a soap, you need to talk to Michele,'” Ducksworth recalled to EW. “So she really put the two of us together.”

This partnership laid the foundation for Beyond The Gates, a series that aims to redefine the representation of Black characters on screen.

“We wanted to have a show on the air that spoke to a different side of the Black experience,” Val Jean explained to EW. “Not the downtrodden, not the ghettoized. We wanted to show rich, Black people doing messy things.”

Breaking through the barriers of conventional daytime television was no easy feat. Since the 1991 cancellation of Generations, a mere handful of soap operas have received the green light, with many facing premature cancellations. The success of Beyond The Gates hinges on its ability to captivate audiences with compelling narratives and relatable characters.

Set in the affluent Maryland suburbs outside Washington, D.C., Beyond The Gates reflects the changing demographics of America.

“In these Maryland suburbs, there were some of the most affluent African American counties in all of America,” Ducksworth explained to EW. This setting provides a rich backdrop for the intricate tapestry of relationships and storylines that will unfold on screen.

Val Jean teases, “The characters are different from anything that I’ve seen in daytime…. We’re presenting something that hasn’t been done before.” While pushing creative boundaries, Beyond The Gates will remain true to the core elements that have captivated soap opera fans for generations – “secrets and lies and betrayals and love and friendship,” as Val Jean succinctly puts it.

Ducksworth enthuses, “It’s a really complex web of people and places and things that all intersect in a way that you would never believe. It’s incredibly unpredictable and really fresh and new.”

Beyond The Gates represents a bold new chapter in daytime television, promising to entertain and engage audiences with its diverse cast, compelling storylines, and innovative approach. As the February 24th premiere date approaches, anticipation is building for this groundbreaking series that aims to redefine the landscape of daytime television.
