Colby Covington, UFC welterweight contender and serious trash talker, believes Conor McGregor’s antics outside the Octagon will eventually land him behind bars.
Covington told MMA News that he believes McGregor is desperate to stay in the headlines because his abilities in the Octagon are under serious question. McGregor is fresh off the back of two consecutive losses to Dustin Poirier.
Chaos: McGregor Will End Up “Behind Bars”
These days, he spends more time fighting musicians like Machine Gun Kelly and an Italian DJ than actual fighters. According to Colby Covington, the former two-division champion thinks he’s above the law.
““He just looks to get headlines. He’s just looking to stay in the spotlight, you know, get some attention around him because he’s coming off some losses. People are questioning if he still has it, what he’s still capable of doing.
He’s made a lot of money, man. He had a great career and he’s had some special moments in the UFC and in his career where he’s made so much money that he’s so filthy rich that he thinks he’s above the law now.”
McGregor was 2020’s highest-paid athlete, thanks in no small part to his record-breaking UFC pay-per-views and various business ventures. His Irish whiskey brand, Proper 12, is the most famous of these, but McGregor lends his celebrity to various brands and business interests including the August McGregor line of menswear.
This obscene wealth, according to Colby Covington, is the source of McGregor’s misery, and will send him to prison if he doesn’t get his act together.
“He thinks that money can buy you whatever you want, but money cannot buy you out of punching an old dude off a stool, or hitting someone’s phone, or throwing a trolley through a bus, or his latest at the music awards, trying (to attack) Machine Gun Kelly.
It’s sad to see, man. It’s a big downfall. I don’t think things are gonna turn out good for him in the long run. I think he’s the type of guy that we will see this come back to haunt him and he could be behind bars someday.”
Conor McGregor remains out of competition thanks to a gruesome leg break sustained in his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier. Although McGregor’s team is forecasting a 2022 return for the Irish fighter, he’ll need to fix his leg and train hard to return to the dizzying heights he once occupied.
