Last month, King—the studio behind popular the Candy Crush game and its clones—dropped Knighthood. Available on both Android and iOS, I was cautious of it initially. First, as I said: this is a game from King. I thought the in-game action from the ads was just ad animation. After all, plenty of these kingdom-strategy-make-a-decision games end up being the same.
I figured this would actually end up being another match-three puzzle game. When I checked the Google Play Store to confirm my suspicions imagine my surprise. This was a game-game. We wouldn’t be matching any cookies, candies, crops—none of that. Oh no, we were battling bandits and goblins. This was something that could end up on my phone awhile!
So, Is Knighthood Good?
Graphically, yes. It uses a clean, cartoonish, polygon-oriented style. Think of a cleaner version of a Nintendo 64 game with more detail and not using skins. Nothing is warped or stretched here. That’s the style here.
The gameplay is pretty tight. I was surprised King could deliver something like this. It can be played with one hand by using your thumb to tap the screen for basic attacks, selecting menu stuff, or selecting locations on the map. The main thing you swipe for is to select another enemy or to use your Rage Gauntlet’s punch.
Battles take place for three rounds and you have to clear all three. Hunts are battles with big rewards. You are able to get three things: a piece of loot, some sort of currency, and shards for heroes. Your Rage Gauntlet houses many heroes who help you in battle.
Every weapon you get works on some type of enemy as does the heroes you gain. You’re able to upgrade gear and level up heroes. There are towns on the map to get more gear or whatever plus you can dismantle gear for more currency, materials, and so on. You can also battle other players’ Rage Knights in the coliseum.
Knighthood’s story is simple: you’re an adventurer who gains their Rage Gauntlet making them a Rage Knight. Your task is to clear out evil from the land. That’s it.
And Now The Bad…
Just after launch, there is a minor problem and one gripe from me. First, there are times when it lags because of everything going on. That means attacks register seconds later sometimes. It’s nothing major and can be fixed in an update.
My gripe is with the rolling tutorial. You’ll think you’re done with the tutorial and can just into the world but no there’s always some new battle mechanic or feature for you to get into. I’ve just reached level six, anything I needed to learn in the game should’ve been presented before level three.
Once that freedom kicked in, I was having a blast but the game is set up to let you rip and run a bit before your mentor drops back in and says “Hey, it looks like you found a gem. Let’s see how to apply that.” Seriously?
These two things aside, Knighthood is a really fun game. It’s like Questland when it was still fun before the combat system change. I’m actually interested in seeing what other features there are—sans the rolling tutorial—and what King adds. If this was a Mobile Gaming Review, Knighthood would be the only King game to get above D-rank from me.
