Mobile Gaming Review: Darkest AFK

Do you know the indie dungeon crawler hit Darkest Dungeon? The game was released by Red Hook Studios back in 2016 and sported this unique, awesome, grim art style. It also had some gameplay that forced strategy and kept you coming back. 

The game spawned a generation of clones and quasi-clones. Either the art style was bit or the gameplay to varying degrees. Darkest AFK takes a lot from the style a some from the mechanics. 

Darkest AFK 

First off let me point out that according to Google Play, this game was developed by the Three Wishes Slot Machines Game Studio. I’m being respectful in capitalizing stuff here, folks. 

This studio did two slots games in addition to this idle RPG. It’s kind of annoying because they had the ability to make a proper game that could stand out but they did slot games which are a dime a dozen on Google Play. 

Anyways, the gameplay in Darkest AFK is more involved than the name advertises. While you can again gear, gold, and goods while not playing, you’ll need to manage some stuff and play through the main storyline path. 

Honestly, this isn’t unusual for idle games with a continuing storyline. Mobile Legends: Adventure was set up like this. As a matter of fact, that game is identical to this one feature-wise. They just have different aesthetics. 

There is the main battle screen with your treasure chest, an item bag, and two other areas of interest. One is the town where you can send characters to the church, the tavern to handle traits, a forge, and a recruitment center. 

I’m certain I missed a spot. It could be a store but I’m almost certain it’s not. The other area of interest is more like the wilderness where you can mine in idle mode or do other activities. 

Any of this sounds familiar? 

Mobile Gaming Verdict: 7/10 

I’m digging this game. Darkest AFK is an idle-ish game where if you dig grinding, you’ll be at home here. The game isn’t stingy with gold and resources but decent gear tends to trickle in. 

There’s quite a bit to keep you busy outside of the main storyline. Some of it will leave you. Mind you, some characters will end up locked out until they’re done with their mission. 

It adds a bit of strategy since you’ll need to figure out what members can fill in that spot. I meant you could change the battle’s difficulty by going with one or two members. 

I’ll say that Darkest AFK is worth installing. It’s more involved than the name promotes but this is definitely a welcome approach. Often times, idle games are aggressive about you dropping in to do something but offer little for you to do.

Expect to hit up everything with a red dot on the main screen. Be sure to get all your rewards and keep leveling stuff up is the best hint here. Again, if you’re hoping for good drops regularly, you’ll be playing this for a long time while waiting.
