Remember Marvel Heroes Omega? This was basically an online-heavy version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance and like Ultimate Alliance, it was had a fanbase of devoted fans.
How fun was it? Let’s jump in the time machine and find out.
Marvel Heroes Omega
It wasn’t even that difficult to play. The controls were easy to pick up and missions were just “show up and beat up the bad guys.” Of course, to keep this from getting boring it was this core mission in several parts of a storyline but it worked.
That’s the formula for most action-oriented games, anyway. No points deducted for originality. No, you started at the Avengers HQ, hot together with your friends or just a group of ransoms, pick up some missions, and we’re sent to an area.
This area was a hub for a number of related and unrelated missions. Just like any game, you got cash and gear drops from wiping out enemies and completing missions.
Nothing new on that front but playing these missions as a group to Avengers and going through somewhat recycled and Frankensteined stories against familiar villains was actually pretty fun.
Retro Gaming Verdict: 8/10
Marvel Heroes Omega was a really fun MMO if you got it on consoles. It was released at a time when there were several online-friendly games but this was one of a few that really caught my attention.
Yes, part of it was my love of comics. The other part was that it was playing it with other comic book and Marvel fans. That PlayStation voice chat was lively and often times it wasn’t about the game!
Whether you were focused on the game and your current run or discussing the latest album releases, Marvel Heroes Omega was a good mellow title.
There was enough challenge where it didn’t get boring but it wasn’t time-consuming. It wasn’t perfect as there could be server issues pretty often early on but the selection of heroes and available missions kept you busy.
Just like any MMO, progress was important here, and taking the Marvel Ultimate Alliance route of playing as licensed heroes stretched it further than it might’ve gone.
It was certainly no DC Universe Online with a Marvel setting.
