It appears that Deadpool franchise star Ryan Reynolds is generally up to play roles that probably wouldn’t get a second look. He’s scored some big roles in hit films and now he’s looking to tackle Dragon’s Lair.
Ryan Reynolds And Netflix Are Going Retro
Netflix is currently working on a number of projects with two of them being video game adaptations. This comes as no surprise since Castlevania is crushing it and The Witcher scoring a second season. While I’m waiting on the network’s The Legend of Zelda series, Dragons Lair is also in the early stages.
Reynolds is now in talks with Netflix to star in the film. However, with it being produced through Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, it’s just about a given he’ll star in Dragon’s Lair as Dirk the Daring. The film is based on the 1983 Cinematronics game of the same name.
Dragon’s Lair was a cutting-edge game that used laserdisc in the 1980s. This allowed for the game to include animated sequences and cut scenes that used traditional animation. The series got its start at the arcades where it had to be a unique fit for the time. It would be ported to multiple consoles and platforms in almost 40-years following its release.
With the fantasy storyline, Western animation style, and adventure game approach, Dragon’s Lair was going to be a hit in the 1980s.
The Effort to Get Dragon’s Lair Made Into A Film
After his second run with Disney, co-creator Don Bluth managed to snag some talent and form his own studio. That studio—which is now Sullivan Bluth Studios—did animated classics such as The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and All Dogs Go To Heaven.
Oh yeah, he did Rock-a-Doodle as well.
After Dragon’s Lair blew up, Bluth spent decades pushing for the game to receive a film since the 1980s while its popularity was still high. As the story goes for Dragon’s Lair, progress was made several times before things took several steps back.
There has always been interest in the game but as the years pass and larger blockbuster franchises are picked up, produced, and premiered, Dragon’s Lair seemed like it would never be made. It seemed as though distributors were more interested in having Bluth’s group do everything else but Dragon’s Lair.
Now that’s a reality with Netflix being the goal. After all, if you can’t float it to theaters, Netflix might pick it up. Trevor Engelson, Don Bluth, Roy Lee, Gary Goldman, and Jon Pomeroy are all producing this film. Handling the script will be Dan and Kevin Hageman, known for their work on A Lego Movie.
