Earlier in the week, Sega generated some buzz about a new console. At this point, it was leaning towards a mini console instead of a full-ledged console—which would’ve been massive. Still, Sega announcing a mini console will cause some buzz. Our own Rhys Boulton mentioned a Dreamcast Mini which is just playing with my emotions as a Dreamcast owner. Instead, Sega announced the $50 Game Gear Micro.
Sega To Release The Game Gear Micro
For the 60th anniversary of Sega, the company announced that there would be four versions of the Game Gear Micro. Each model will come with four titles. The handheld itself has a 1.15-inch display and measures 80mm x 43mm x 20mm according to The Verge.
Now, that screen is extremely small but if you collect all four—which is the intent—you can get the Big Screen and magnify the screen. It might be necessary as these handhelds fit in the palm of your hand, it seems.
Since this isn’t a newer version of the Game Gear, it doesn’t have a modern design or anything. It’s simply a smaller version of the Game Gear which was released in 1990. It even allows you to use batteries. Imagine that in 2020.

If you’re interested in the black version, you’ll get Sonic, Puyo Puyo 2, Out Run, and Royal Stone. Let’s say that blue is more your color. The games you’re looking at includes Sonic Chaos, Gunstar Heroes, Sylvan Tale, and Baku Baku Animal. Yellow is an alright color for a handheld, I had the Pikachu edition GameBoy Color and it was dope.
With the yellow Game Gear Micro, your games will include Shining Force Gaiden: Ensei – Jashin no Kuni he, Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict, and Nazopuyo Aruru no Ru. Finally, there’s the red version. This version comes with Revelations: The Demon Slayer, Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special, The GG Shinobi, and Columns.
No Release For The West?
Or rather those are the games you’d pick up if you purchased this in Japan. The Western line-up of games hasn’t been announced by Sega nor has a Western release. If you’re fortunate enough to be on the ground floor for the Game Gear Micro, it releases on October 6th.
While I was expecting a Dreamcast Mini (thanks Rhys), I’m glad to see that Sega is staying on brand here and including an extra accessory for one of its devices. If it took of you of the game in the first place why not run the idea with mini retro handhelds?
Was This The Best Route For Sega’s Anniversary?
Was it the best idea to release a micro version of a handheld that got its cheeks clapped by another handheld with fewer color options? For the 60th anniversary? We’ll have to see how this one goes over with gamers in Japan. The handheld didn’t really gain a foothold in the U.S during the early 90s but maybe there could be some post-90s clarity with the Game Gear Micro.
