Earlier this month, it was revealed that Sega redesigned the title screen for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to promote social distancing in these times. The caption underneath the logo says “Please stay at least 6912 pixels apart” and features Sonic and Tails in their own winged-shields. This came along with other artwork to encourage staying home if you can and social distancing at the minimum.
The New Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Title Screen Is A Throwback To The 90s
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 dropped in 1992, so it’s steeped in the 90s. The title screen update also comes off as a throwback to the old FBI warning at the start of arcade games and some console ports. I’m sure many of us remember this:
At the time, there was still a scare about drug use ravaging the U.S. I guess they figured, “Hey, those stoners love video games. Put this message at the start!” In reality, they should’ve put it on fast food wrappers and snack bags if you’re targeting some folks but this warning was for children. So, Sega has this message for players to practice social distancing. It’s a great edit and kind of shows that Sega has a heart. Will people follow it is another question. I mean, for the most part, we never really followed the ESRB ratings on games, read the Terms of Service, or take caution because the lighting effects in games can cause seizures.
Then again, COVID-19 is different and people have died because of it. It’s uprooted everyday life, recreation, and multiple industries. If that isn’t enough to move people to consider others and keep their distance (if possible), maybe the mortal enemy of Eggman could do it. Any way to get the message out and encourage people is good if it isn’t intrusive. This wasn’t intrusive. Those Sega title screens lasted a couple of seconds and could be sped through by hitting a button. We’re not being forced to sit through Sonic and Tails social distancing or Knuckles removing his gloves and washing his hands. Plus, Alex Kidd could never be the health ambassador gamers need. Who are you more likely to entertain on COVID-19 safety awareness? Sonic who has been a gaming icon and media franchise for decades or Alex Kidd who had two hits, probably licks door handles, and steals copper wire? Let us know in the comments and be safe out there!
