The Wonder Years spoilers reveal we had something different yet again. This time, Dean Williams (Elisha “EJ” Williams) wanted to get in touch with nature. The problem is, his dad, Bill Williams (Dulé Hill), wasn’t up to the task. Let’s take a look at what happened and the awesome moment this episode brought.
The Wonder Years spoilers: New ground
So, The Wonder Years spoilers reveal the previous episode was a bit of a departure in that it didn’t have anything to do with the original’s stories. This one, as far as we remember, is the same. See, Dean wanted to join a scout troupe. His father objected to him getting involved in one, as it was all white kids.
This led to Lillian Williams (Saycon Sengbloh) reminding them there was once a troupe Dean’s brother belonged to. Bill didn’t remember it well, because he was on the road a lot. After pointing Bill in the right direction, they decided to seek out the troupe leader.
There was a problem, though. The guy didn’t want to have anything to do with leading a bunch of kids out into the woods at his age, so Dean was left a bit disappointed. That’s when Bill decided to step in and lead an all-new troupe for Dean and a bunch of his friends. This both brought the laughs and the feels.
The Wonder Years spoilers: Sneaky
First, we have to give Bill credit. He knew he didn’t have the knowledge (or the desire) to take the kids into the woods on his own. So, he decided to make up a bunch of badges for the group. Of course, these all happened to be stuff that related to the chores he had to do around the house.
So, he basically got the kids to do his yardwork, fix a sink, and stuff like that. We cracked up at watching this, but there was something later that brought the feels and was a great lesson.
The Wonder Years spoilers: The trip
So, Coach Long (Allen Maldonado) came by to get his kid and the whole thing went very wrong for Bill and his chore scam. Coach Long ended up becoming co-leader of the troupe and they were going to take the kids on a trip to get nature badges and things like that.
The feels came when Bill showed how bad he is at everything to do with camping. His incompetence in the wild led to Dean missing a chance at a swimming badge. So, he predictably blew up in front of everyone, which made Bill quietly admit that Coach Long is right about getting back to camp. And he should be the one to lead them back.
Later on, Coach Long, who has known Bill since they were kids, had a talk with Dean. He agreed Bill is terrible at everything to do with camping, but there was a good reason. He was more interested in staying home to practice music. We loved the message of focusing on what fires you up and making it work for you, which Bill has. And that music commitment actually worked out well.
During the camping trip, rain came and messed up any chance of continuing with it. So, Bill had an idea. He and Coach Long brought the entire group to a club to watch live music for their music appreciation badge. Obviously, this is where Bill shined, as he took the lead in teaching the kids about music. He even got called up on stage by the band to perform with them. By then, Dean and all the other kids were impressed and Bill probably felt a lot better about himself. It was a fun episode that makes us look forward to more.
