12 days after the death of the longest reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, , the United Kingdom’s official period of mourning has ended.
When the Queen passed away on September 8, 2022 at age 96, the United Kingdom started a 10-day period of mourning, leading up to the her funeral arrangements on Monday, September 19.
After the state funeral, flags on British government buildings all over the world returned to flying at full mast on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. However, the royal family will continue to mourn until seven days after the late monarch’s funeral.
United Kingdom’s 10-Day Mourning Period Following The Queen’s Funeral Comes To And End
The people that observe the royal mourning include members of the royal family, staff in the royal households and troops on ceremonial duties. The Queen was laid to rest at King George VI Memorial Chapel after her state funeral and committal service.
As reported by Buckingham palace, she was buried beside her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, during a private burial service. The palace paid tribute to late Queen Elizabeth II on social media, sharing a lovely picture of her enjoying the great outdoors. The caption read, “‘May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest.’ In loving memory of Her Majesty The Queen. 1926 – 2022.”
On Monday, the Palace took to social media to confirm the details of the private burial with a simple statement that read, “This evening a Private Burial will take place in The King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor. The Queen will be Laid to Rest with her late husband The Duke of Edinburgh, alongside her father King George VI, mother Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and sister Princess Margaret.”
The statement was shared alongside a vintage, undated photo of the five royals. The Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, who passed away at age 99 in April of 2021, was moved from the Royal Vault beneath the chapel, where he was temporarily interred, to be by his wife’s side.
