Unreal Engine 5 was highlighted in a special video with Technical Director of Graphics, Brian Karis, and Special Projects Art Director Jerome Platteaux. The video gave us an in-depth look at the power and capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and the kind of quality we can expect to see!
According to their video description,
“Unreal Engine 5 empowers artists to achieve unprecedented levels of detail and interactivity, and brings these capabilities within practical reach of teams of all sizes through highly productive tools and content libraries.
Join Technical Director of Graphics Brian Karis and Special Projects Art Director Jerome Platteaux (filmed in March 2020) for an in-depth look at “Lumen in the Land of Nanite” – a real-time demonstration running live on PlayStation 5 showcasing two new core technologies that will debut in UE5: Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry, which frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see, and Lumen, a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes.
Also present in the demo are next-gen features already available in Unreal Engine 4.25, such as Niagara VFX improvements, Chaos physics and destruction, animation system enhancements, and audio advancements. Unreal Engine 4.25 also includes support for next-gen consoles.”
Unreal Engine 5 Looks Unbelievable! – Demo Is Shown Running On PlayStation 5
Together, they give us an in-depth look at the graphics of the PlayStation 5 with a demo that makes us feel like we’re in a real cave! They describe how many different triangles make up the shapes and objects in the scene and how it compresses it down to an amount sustainable to run.
It wasn’t just a masterclass in graphics however, they also go into the new lighting system and sound effects. In the nearly 10 minute video, our expectations are regularly met and surpassed. Just when I thought it wasn’t going to get any better, they open the door to an entire horizon of cliffs, buildings, statues, desert plains, portals, and more! While what they showed us was just a demo, I think we all want this to be a real game now!
