Georges St-Pierre is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest fighters ever to grace the UFC. He was a particularly active fighter in his prime, so it’s no surprise that he’s been keeping himself busy outside the Octagon. Since his retirement from MMA, he’s taken up a few new hobbies, including a role as the main villain in a Marvel series, and, according to a recent post on Instagram, a new crash diet.
You’ve probably heard of Paleo. You’ve probably heard of Atkins. You’ve definitely heard of the vegan diet. What about the opposite of veganism – the animal based diet? With high profile proponents ranging from controversial professor Jordan Peterson to UFC commentator Joe Rogan the carnivore diet has also appealed to GSP.
Even MMA legends are trying this RUTHLESS new diet…
Posting a selfie video to Instagram two weeks into his animal-based diet plan, GSP is quick to clarify that it is not a strict carnivore diet only consisting of meat. Instead, he first eats meat and organs, but is also allowed to eat fruit. Vegetables, on the other hand, are strictly off the menu, as are sugar and, perhaps hardest of all, coffee.
The former welterweight and middleweight champion claims to have lost five pounds (just over two kilograms) in two weeks, simply by abstaining from anything but meat, organs, and fruit. GSP is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest fighters the UFC has ever seen, defending his Welterweight title nine times in a row.
He reigned as Welterweight champion for over two thousand days, until he voluntarily vacated the title in 2013. Upon his return to the UFC, St-Pierre defeated Michael Bisping to win the Middleweight title in November 2017.
It takes spectacular discipline in the gym and in the kitchen to scale these lofty heights. Many fighters adopt crash diets, attempting to cut any and all excess weight ahead of fights. Until it was outlawed, some would even submit themselves to extreme dehydration at weigh-ins, requiring instant intravenous rehydration before the bout.
What sets GSP apart is that his new diet seems to have nothing to do with fighting, and more to do with his overall wellbeing. Perhaps the greatest test of the legendary French Canadian’s discipline will be that May is the month of his 39’s birthday, and he will have to abstain from chocolate cake, instead opting to celebrate his birthday with “a big fat wagyu ribeye with a candle on top”.
