Katie and Derek were a couple that we all thought would make it through the experiment. The tables have turned. Derek told fans that he wasn’t in love with Katie and she told fans that she was worried that he couldn’t commit to her fully. He even spoke out about how he had never believed in love. This didn’t sound like a good start to their relationship. Katie had other doubts too and some of them were about having children with him. She believed that he had a lot of dreams about their future together, but none of it was even realistic.

On the March 25 episode, Derek wanted to go through some of his old stuff to bond with Katie some more, but as they were going through his things, she just ended up getting jealous about his past. As the couple looked through his old stuff, they found old poetry that he wrote when he was a teenager. Katie asked, “Did you write this?” Derek told her that he wrote it when he was a freshman or a sophomore in high school. As he read the poem to her, she heard the word I love you in the poem and that made her wonder who it was all about. Katie’s reaction was, “What the F***? You sound like someone who’s been in intense love before. I’m shocked right now.”
Katie told cameras, “The poem is probably the deepest I’ve seen Derek be. I don’t even know how to feel about it. I’m a little bit uncomfortable. You say you’ve never been in love, but I feel like you need to feel this a little bit in order to write about it.” Then she questioned Derek more about it. “I don’t even know what to say about you right now. That’s unreal. You’ve never been in love, and you were a freshman when you wrote that.” Derek followed up saying, “I’m a dreamer. I’m a hopeless romantic. You visualize what could be. I feel like I know what love should feel like, so I just used that.”
