Any hope of Conor McGregor revisiting his early-career fight with Max Holloway seems to be extinguished, at least for now. Dana White, president of the UFC, dismissed the idea out of hand at the post-fight press conference at UFC Vegas 42.
“I don’t know what’s next for Max. It does make sense to see him and Volkanovski again, but we’ll get that figured out. Conor’s not even [ready to fight]. Conor’s still hurt. To even talk about Conor is silly.”
Dana White Snubs Holloway Vs McGregor Rematch
Conor McGregor has not fought at featherweight since his record-breaking title victory over Jose Aldo. He since moved up to lightweight, claiming Eddie Alvarez’s title, and fought Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone at welterweight.
It’s unlikely that we’ll ever see McGregor, who is still nursing a broken leg sustained fighting Dustin Poirier, at 145 pounds ever again. Holloway still has a decent chance at the featherweight title, however, and may well get his shot sooner rather than later.
On that note, Dana White is interested in putting together yet another title challenge for Max Holloway. Holloway is 2-0 against Alexander Volkanovski, the reigning featherweight champion, but many feel that Holloway actually won their second fight, if not the first, too. There’s clear unfinished business as far as some fans are concerned, and Dana White would be happy to exploit it.
“It’s one of those things. They’re razor-thin [decisions], and he just comes in and puts on a performance like this. This is a guy Volkanovski is going to have to just get him out of the way and do it again.”
Holloway’s stunning performance against Yair Rodriguez has placed him firmly back in title contention, says White. “It’s one of the best fights I’ve ever seen.
The fact that Yair was off for two years and comes in and puts on a performance like this, unheard of. It’s incredible.
Then Max, I didn’t think he was going to make it out of the second round with the calf kicks, and then he after made it to the next round, I’m like he’s probably not going to be able to walk out of the octagon by himself.
He’s walking around back there like nothing even happened. He said his leg is fine. It’s unbelievable how tough this guy is.”
