The reigning UFC featherweight champion insists that Max Holloway is afraid of fighting him again. Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski recently told his YouTube channel that Holloway, too concerned with his legacy, won’t be entering the Octagon for a title challenge any time soon.
“Max? We know what’s next. Leading into this fight, the winner was going to get the title shot, whether it was Max or Yair. UFC said that to us.
Volkanovski: Max Holloway is “Scared” of Trilogy Fight
We were waiting on it. I’m sure the UFC said it to Max. So green light from the UFC on the trilogy, green light from me, but the only one that’s talking about other options is Max Holloway.
So this might rattle a few feathers, but I’m gonna leave you with this. Am I saying he’s scared? Maybe. But I want you to hear me out.
For Max, this is a big deal. You fight me again and lose and go 0-3 against me in the featherweight division, in your prime, you talk about legacy, your name isn’t in the GOAT conversation anymore. It’s in GOAT conversations now, even though he’s 0-2 against me. People are still throwing his name in the GOAT conversation.
If he loses again, we know no more. Your legacy in the featherweight division, tarnished. Let’s be real, 0-3 in your prime. That doesn’t look good. Maybe that’s what it is. Maybe he wants bigger options, money fights because he could still have his legacy talks, get some money fights. But if he loses, that tarnishes that legacy.”
Volkanovksi and Holloway have fought twice before, with the Australian earning victories both times. Their most recent fight, which took place last year, was a controversial one, with many pundits and fans believing Holloway earned a win. Regardless, Volkanovski has maintained the unbeaten streak going back to his early days in Australia’s low-level fight promotions.
The featherweight champ recently defended his title against Brian Ortega in a serious fight of the year contender. Max Holloway just took out Yair Rodriguez to establish himself as the clear #1 contender for the featherweight belt, and the UFC brass as well as MMA fans around the world clearly want to see the trilogy fight go ahead.
If Volkanovski is to be believed, it’s all down to Max Holloway and his camp. Whether Holloway is willing to line up a title shot or work his way through a few other opponents first remains to be seen. Either way, the trilogy fight, if it happens, is sure to be a thriller.
