Cartel Tycoon is a crime-oriented business simulation game by Moon Moose. It is based on the 1980s and 1990s drug trade in South America and that’s a perfect combination to pique my interest.
Cartel Tycoon
In CT, you must take control of a small cartel and grow it to a large criminal organization. This is mainly done by kicking off drug farming and establishing transportation routes for your product.
To get all of this done, you’re going to need to hire some capable soldiers to assist in getting stuff running, maintaining it, washing dirty cash, and protecting your holdings from the police’s special task force and rival cartels.
As your territory expands, you’ll be able to head into other territories and attempt to take it over. You’ll also have to balance your public perception, threat level, and relationship with the government as well as with those in your organization.
All of this is just to keep the product flowing, keep your business undetectable and protected, and keep the cash flowing.
Think if Tropico was mixed with Narcos and you have Cartel Tycoon. Actually, this game would be perfect for a cross-promotion thing with Narcos since the theme is right there.
Play or Pass: PLAY
Cartel Tycoon is a hard “PLAY” with authority. The developers are constantly working on improvements for the game and it really shows.
Even before a lot of the more recent updates, Cartel Tycoon was a strong game with a story mode that serves as a tutorial to the gameplay mechanics without feeling like a tutorial or moving at a tutorial pace.
You know that tutorial pace, everything slows down and you become eager to jump in and do your dirt but you know the tutorial is necessary.
However, games come with such elaborate mechanics that tie into other elaborate mechanics that the tutorial experience is often quicksand.
CT makes the tutorial fun with a story mode that guides you through learning the mechanics at the same time so the flow of the game isn’t ruined for the player.
The game is still pretty damn new and you can only expect more updates that will expand the gameplay to come players’ way.
If you’re looking for a challenge off the bat, survival mode will do it for you but the game is pretty challenging even in the story mode for both management game veterans and newcomers. If you dig games like Tropico, this one might just be up your alley.
