Muck is a survival game developed by Dani in June. The best comparison is if you mixed Minecraft with something like Unturned. Some streamers and viewers have called it discount Minecraft but this game is more than that.
Don’t Go It Alone in Muck
I’d say it’s a stylized survival game that takes the Minecraft and Unturned route of not going for visual realism but being on the hardcore side gameplay-wise. It’s deceptively difficult if you go in expecting a fun build ‘em time and killing a few zombies.
No, this game can be unforgiving if you attempt to go it alone. Playing in a group isn’t necessary as a few streamers are doing solo runs in Muck but a group is heavily suggested.
The main reason is just for gathering resources and crafting quickly. Once night falls, it’s your ass if you’re soloing this game. You really have to be quick with building and gathering.
It’s not so different from most construction-oriented survival games in that respect. However, these ghouls or zombies are particularly aggressive and can seemingly appear out of nowhere.
With that said, you can solo with greater success in other games of this kind. I believe it’s down to the time the game starts you off in single player. It’s the afternoon and you’ve got a few hours until evening hits.
Now, if it started you in the morning, solo-ing would be smoother but this game isn’t meant to be smooth sailing.
Soloing Doesn’t Equal Death
When I gave it a couple of tries, it was while checking it out to see if it’s something I’d enjoy playing with others. I tend not to do online play much but when I do it’s usually with familiar players.
I saw it on Steam and that our own Jeff Porter played it some and figured “Hell, Jeff played it. I’m finally able to play it and it’s free.” The first few runs were quick deaths after nightfall as I was still getting wood for a nice-sized hut to start off.
After getting mauled, I just wanted a shanty. Just four damn walls and a floor. A roof and windows weren’t even necessary, just something with a door to keep the zombies at bay until the morning.
I had some success surviving until daybreak by finding one of the abandoned houses and putting a wall at the doorway but these zombies are relentless. They found where I was hiding and they wailed on that wall trying to break it down even when the sun rose.
Don’t let my early experiences with Muck deter you, there’s a ton of potential for fun and these are the kind of games I’ve been enjoying recently but get a buddy or a group just to improve your odds.
