Hold up. I know what you’re going to say. “Really? Who cares if another Steven Seagal movie ever comes out?” I hear you and I understand but hear me out for a second.
The first five of Steven Seagal’s films are classics, ‘Above the Law‘, ‘Hard to Kill’, ‘Marked for Death’, ‘Out for Justice’, and ‘Under Siege’. Not only did they introduce Seagal and the art of Aikido onto the big screen, but they were genuinely decent action films and starred a laundry list of other acting greats like Tommy Lee Jones, Pam Grier, William Forsythe, and Jerry Orbach.
Not to mention he had some of the greatest character names ever put to film. Nico Toscani (Above the Law), Mason Storm (Hard to Kill), and Casey Ryback (Under Siege) will forever be engraved into our brains.
Now, when you go past these, that’s when you start trailing off and getting into Wonderland. Not to mention the numerous lies Seagal has been caught in, his terrible attitude, sexual assault cases, fake fights, and well, pretty much everything else under the sun.
I’m not here to say Seagal doesn’t have a checkered past, but when you see something like ‘Above the Law 2’ on IMDb, it makes you relive the glory days.
Is Steven Seagal’s ‘Above The Law 2’ Ever Really Going To Happen?
Now, anyone familiar with bad action films is probably aware of the truly god awful things Seagal has put out straight to DVD. Even if they were released in the 80s’ or 90s’, they’d still be terrible. But there’s something about the title, ‘Above the Law 2’ that almost gives me hope.
Now, I’m not one to judge folks for their weight, but if you’re going to continue to assume the role of an “action hero”, I think you owe it to the fans to stay in shape. I mean, look at Stallone, Schwarzenegger, or Lundgren. These are old men, but they know a thing or two about “the look” and what it takes to appear dominant on screen.
Seagal, while he was never really a big guy, was at least athletic-looking in his earlier roles. It was believable, like a Bruce Willis-type. However, he’s since ballooned and looks terrible. Let’s be honest.
Though there’s a small part of me that would want to see him really take it seriously. Realize that ‘Above the Law’ made him an overnight sensation, and if he truly wanted to do something special like a sequel, shedding some weight would be the least he could do.
Now, this sequel has been tossed around since August 1st, 2016, when Seagal himself tweeted about it saying he was, “Very excited about this. 27 years in the making. #Steam Roller #AboveTheLaw2 @NicosRevenge”, and has been sitting in pre-production for a while.

As much as we may hope that Seagal would be serious about the role and want to create a special sequel for what’s left of his fans, I’m not sure we should continue to hold our breath. (Not that there are many fans left that are)
Interestingly enough, is not only Steven Seagal listed in the cast of the IMDb page, but so is writer Andrew Davis, who also wrote the first one. This is important to note as Seagal has “written” many of his newer straight to DVD releases and we know how that turns out.
If Davis is truly writing the sequel, could they just be waiting for funding? Could the funding be held up as they wait for Seagal to shed some weight and get serious about the role?
At any rate, it’s silly to think that any action film viewer wouldn’t at least be a little interested in a classic like ‘Above the Law’ getting a sequel. While he hasn’t given us much to expect from him since the late 90s’, it’d be a lot of stock to buy into such a film. Then again, anything is possible. Look at what the internet has done for Brendan Fraser (arguably one of the nicest guys in Hollywood).
Could There Be A Chance Of A Steven Seagal Resurgence?
Could there be a very real resurgence for Steven Seagal, or is it too late? To be honest, it may have been too late as soon as his first film came out. He’s not a good actor, but then again, neither are many of our other favorite action heroes. To be fair, Seagal does rank towards the bottom of the pack, even in his prime, but how awesome would it be to see Nico return?
What do you think? Would you watch ‘Above the Law 2’ and what would you expect from a film like that?? Let us know in the comments below.
