There have been few multiplayer FPS games in my gaming lifetime that have constantly held my attention.
The only ones that come to mind off the top of my head are Killzone: Shadowfall, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
The similarities in these titles are few, but something they all have in common is the tight mechanics, great maps, and for the most part, players who rely on skill more so than cheap tactics.
…and then there is Call of Duty: BOCW.
Why Do I Love Call of Duty: BOCW
Do not get me wrong. COD: BOCW is fun. It can hold my attention for kind of a long time.
The reason I love it though is that at its very core, it is a Call of Duty game. The mechanics are mostly the same as the previous entries.
The fast-paced action and tight gameplay is something that sets it apart from its competition. When it is at its best, there is not a multiplayer FPS game better than it.
To me, the best COD game was BO2, and Battlefield 4 was the only game even close to being as good. You can’t compare them easily because they are two completely different games. BO2 still gets the edge though.
Why Do I Hate It
Where do I begin? Over the years, Call of Duty gradually changed from being its own game that I know and love to something more resembling the competition.
The issue with it comes from the vocal minority speaking for the community as a whole on what they want in the game, which in turn, the developers take as what the whole fanbase wants.
An example of this is the larger maps in COD: BOCW. If there were more players in the games, it wouldn’t be an issue. Many people wanted the maps to be bigger because of BF4. I didn’t.
Something else about the maps is that they are too open. You would think that they would have learned from some of the complaints from COD: MW, but I guess not.
There are too many doorways, windows, and hiding holes in each map. With things like this, you are just begging for people to find their favorite corner and camp there.
This is a large falloff from the glory days of COD where there were campers, but they were more of a minority than a majority like they are now.
