Hmmmm. So, an old map from Call of Duty: BO2 is one of the best maps in the game? Is that a slight on Call of Duty: BOCW?
To be honest, yes, and no. While nostalgia is a big factor to why this map is so good, I think that it is a good fanservice move rather than an absolute need for the game.
BOCW Brings The Goods
Unlike the situation with COD: MW, this game does not need this map.
In MW, they brought back many of the old maps from the series because the fans just did not like the new map designs.
In this case, even though there are some maps in the game that I feel are not good at all, there are bright spots for them.
Treyarch has historically mostly made good maps. This is just a call back to the point in COD history that was at its peak in the eyes of many fans.
How Does The Old Map Play In BOCW
Surprisingly good. There have been times in the past where when they bring older maps back, they will change them to make them fit into the gameplay advancements. This one was left the same.
The appeal of this map and most maps in Call of Duty’s prime is that the map is small and simple. All of the action is pushed to one main area, with two other paths where there might be action.
Unlike many of the launch maps in the game, this map is great for any game mode.
I am more of an objective game mode player (domination, kill confirmed, hardpoint), but this map is also good for team deathmatch.
Of course, there is a visual upgrade to the map with more details being added and textures looking crisper.
In the pool on the side of the screen, you can now swim in the water and come up for a sneaky flank or to give the enemy something else to worry about.
While I would say even in its day, it wasn’t one of the best maps to play, it was still good and gave you exactly what you want from a COD map.
Comparing this map to the new maps, make you miss the simpler days of COD.
Final Score: 8.5/10
